A will before you need it

Why a will is less about death than about the people you leave behind, and what to have ready for a first meeting.

By Eleanor Halden · Senior partner, family

Most people put off making a will because it feels like planning for the worst. In practice a will is a short document that saves the people you love a great deal of time, money and argument.

What to have ready

  • A rough list of what you own and owe.
  • Who you’d like to benefit, and anyone who depends on you.
  • Who you trust to deal with things (your executors).
  • Any wishes about guardians for children.

A simple will takes one meeting and a signing. This is general information, not advice on your situation.
